Our individual health risks depend on specific factors, including age, gender, environment, genotype and family predispositions, lifestyle choices, and many more. Therefore, the components included in our medical check-up will vary from person to person, and they will even vary for the same individual over time. As a general rule, the evaluation packages become larger with ageing: people over 40 should undergo a more detailed health assessment than those in their 20s. However, a typical check-up program includes: A review of your general health, medical history, pre-existing conditions, if any, habits, and lifestyle. Blood and urine tests to check up on the function of the thyroid, liver, kidneys, immune system, etc. Image tests like x-ray, ultrasonography or scans One or more physical examinations and consultations Depending on the information obtained, the doctor may recommend additional medical tests and exams, such as cardiac and lung function tests, bone density screening, mammography, colon or prostate cancer screenings, eye exam, skin examination, etc. A routine health assessment may include a head-to-toe complete check-up and specific screening for particular diseases.
To make the most of your health check, write down all your questions and concerns you would like to discuss with your doctor. Review the medical history of your family and take your previous test results to ensure you will not miss important details. You are recommended to arrive on an empty stomach for the arrangement. Fasting for 8-10 hours will be needed, sometimes 12-14 hours for specific blood tests. Drinking plain water is allowed, but sweets, caffeine intake, and smoking are disallowed. You should stop alcohol intake 24 hours before the examination and have a light meal for the latest dinner. It is not recommended to consume foods such as red meat, beetroot, spinach, and broccoli two days before your appointment. If your check-up program includes abdominal screening, you should have a full bladder. For female patients, mammography is recommended during the 3rd-10th day of the menstrual cycle. Before the mammogram screening, no shower, body gel, or cream use is recommended. You will be instructed to stop the usage of medications in certain cases.
